Description of Decortication

Pleural mesothelioma cancer is triggered by contact with asbestos and evolves once the asbestos materials become held in the area between your mesothelium cells. When they're held in the mesothelium, the materials make the cancerous cells split irregularly leading to severe thickening from the pleural membrane. This might cause fluid build-up known as pleural effusion. The fluid then puts pressure about the lung area and also the breathing (respiratory system) system stopping regular breathing. Once the pleura are thickened, it always causes some degree of pain and discomfort for that patient. When the pleura begin to thicken more, it can result in difficulty breathing. Because the patient struggles with insufficient oxygen, this may lead to other serious health problems as well.

Decortication refers to a surgical procedure that entails surgery on the exterior layer, membrane, or " floating " fibrous covering of the organ. The process is generally done once the lung is wrapped in a stiff pleural peel restricting expansion of the lungs. Less frequently a decortication may be performed for severe pneumonia to treat empyema.

A pleurectomy is a surgical treatment to get rid of area of the pleura, the liner round the lung area. It is frequently used for the same types of conditions as a decortication, but involves more of the lung. This is one type of surgery completed to treat mesothelioma cancer. The surgeon removes the pleura, the area where the majority of the malignant tumor is generally situated. When the cancer is very advanced the procedure can be a palliative process, but if caught early enough there is a chance that a pleurectomy can contribute, along with radiation or chemotherapy, to a cure.

When carrying out a pleurectomy or decortication on the lung the individual is under general anesthesia and several openings are made to allow access to the site of the surgery. The surgeon studies regions of the pleural membrane (a type of enclosure that surrounds the lung area) to locate areas which have become scarred and damaged, and removes them. The next thing is to shut the surgical opening and remove the individual from anesthesia. This really is major surgery, it's invasive and also the patient needs a few days of monitoring inside a hospital to determine the patient is healing as he or she should.
